Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, reaffirmed the UN’s support for Somalia’s peace and state-building efforts during her visit to the capital, Mogadishu.

In a series of meetings with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, senior government officials, and representatives of civil society, Ms. DiCarlo emphasized the UN’s commitment to assisting Somalia in addressing its key development challenges.

“The UN has been a longstanding partner to Somalia and remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the Somali government and its people,” said Ms. DiCarlo. “Together, we aim to build on the commendable achievements and priorities agreed upon to address key development challenges facing the country – we stand ready to work alongside the Federal Government of Somalia to accomplish this.”

During her discussions with President Mohamud, Ms. DiCarlo highlighted Somalia’s recent achievements, including progress on debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative, its accession to the East African Community, and the lifting of the arms embargo.

She also congratulated Somalia on securing a seat on the UN Security Council for 2025-26, underscoring the UN’s readiness to collaborate on upcoming initiatives, including the transition of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Ms. DiCarlo also engaged with Ambassador Mohammed El-Amine Souef, Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia and Head of ATMIS, to discuss the planned transition of ATMIS to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) on 1 January 2025.

Additionally, she met with members of the international diplomatic community in Mogadishu to address various issues impacting Somalia’s stability and development.

The visit underlines the UN’s ongoing dedication to supporting Somalia’s efforts in achieving long-term peace, security, and development, as the country continues to navigate significant transitions and new opportunities on the global stage.
