Djibouti – As part of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence”, the US Embassy in Djibouti hosted a roundtable discussion bringing together experts, activists, and community members to address critical issues, including female genital mutilation (FGM) and domestic violence. In her opening remarks, US Ambassador to Djibouti, Cynthia Kierscht, underscored the urgency of tackling gender-based violence, describing it as a fundamental violation of human rights that hinders equality, social progress, and sustainable development.“These violences slow down equality, obstruct social progress, and undermine sustainable development,” said Ambassador Kierscht, reaffirming US support for local initiatives aimed at building safer communities. The panel highlighted concrete solutions to combat gender-based violence, with a particular emphasis on education, legislation, and community support. One key focus was the regional victim support centers, established through a partnership between USAID and Djibouti’s Ministry of Women and Family Affairs. These centers, now operational across the country, provide accessible support services to survivors, sparing them the challenges of traveling long distances to the capital for assistance.Ambassador Kierscht stressed the importance of sustained, collective action:“The fight against gender-based violence cannot be limited to a single campaign. It requires year-round, collective action involving governments, associations, and citizens,” she declared. The discussions concluded with ambitious proposals, including raising awareness among young people, strengthening legal frameworks, and fostering community engagement to address these issues at their roots.“Together, we must work for a future free of this violence,” Ambassador Kierscht concluded, urging all stakeholders to commit to long-term solutions. The event underscored the critical role of collaboration in ending gender-based violence and advancing the rights and safety of women and girls in Djibouti.L'ambassade des États-Unis a organisé un panel appelant à mettre fin à la violence basée sur le genre, y compris les mutilations génitales féminines (MGF) et la violence domestique.
