Mogadishu, Somalia – An official report released by the Somali National Bureau of Statistics revealed that the city of Boorama is among the cities with the lowest poverty levels in Somalia. This report was presented by the Somalia Census Project during its second phase, which includes a district-level poverty report and a quarterly commodity price report for the first quarter of the year. The event took place today in Mogadishu.Based on data collected at the district level, the report analyzed poverty rates across Somalia’s regions and districts using the Fay-Herriot statistical method.According to the report, Boorama emerged with a low poverty rate, recording a poverty level of 34.3%, compared to other cities in Somalia. The National Bureau of Statistics also indicated that some cities, such as Baydhabo, Kismayo, and other areas in the southern regions, are still struggling with very high poverty rates. This situation requires urgent measures to reduce poverty and improve basic services. The data for the report comes from the 2022 Somalia Integrated Household Budget Survey, which is the most comprehensive survey used to determine poverty levels. The Fay-Herriot method applied in the report enabled poverty estimation at the district level.Additionally, the report noted that it will be crucial for government plans and policies to target districts and cities with high poverty rates.Overall, the report encourages the Somali government and aid organizations to focus investment on cities like Boorama to further strengthen economic progress and to prevent widespread poverty in other regions of Somalia.
