Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir on Sunday received 20 tractors from the World Bank, a vital support aimed at enhancing Somalia’s agricultural productivity and food security.

The initiative represents a step forward for Somalia’s agricultural sector, which forms over 70% of the nation’s GDP, 80% of employment, and approximately 50% of exports according to the World Bank.

Beyond equipment, the World Bank’s contributions extend to climate resilience efforts and institutional capacity building. Initiatives to enhance water harvesting help communities adapt to droughts, while training programs support governmental and local bodies in managing environmental activities.

Despite the support, Somali farmers face ongoing challenges, including access to infrastructure, quality seeds, security concerns, and limited market options for their produce.

Minister Hayir commended the World Bank’s assistance, emphasizing that such support is critical for overcoming barriers and supporting Somali farmers.
