Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the constitution on Friday.

In his speech during Khutba prayer, the president underscored the importance of finalizing the constitution, stating that it will be flexible, with changes made in response to evolving circumstances.

He emphasized that the constitutional draft is currently under parliamentary review, reassuring the public that there is ample time for comprehensive deliberation to ensure the incorporation of diverse perspectives.

“It is not a matter of differences in opinions or addressing every concern, but we are committed to discussing with every concerned party as much as possible,” President Mohamud said.

President Mohamud reiterated his dedication to avoiding hurried decisions, acknowledging the time lost in the country’s developmental journey.

He called on the relevant parties to expedite the completion of the constitution and affirmed his commitment to it since his reelection in 2021.

The president called for trust in the elected parliament, assuring that the ongoing parliamentary session is set to bring about an effective constitution.

“The formulation, completion, approval, and implementation of the constitution lie within the federal parliament of Somalia, as clearly stated in our laws. This means that laws originating from the parliament are drafted objectively and not based on personal preferences,” the president stated.

“The people should have confidence in their ability to add positive contributions to the constitution. It is a transparent and inclusive process. There will be no way we can go to the 12th Parliament with an incomplete constitution,” he added.

He pledged against any unwarranted claims to government power, emphasizing the establishment and preservation of a democratic system in the country.

“The aim of the government is not to intimidate or seize power. However, as long as we engage in dialogue, we will not be affiliated with any particular faction,” he stated.

President Hassan’s remarks relating to make changes into the current provissional constitution came a week after the Somali Security Forces took over the security responsiblity of Villa-Somalia and Parliament Building from the African Union Transition in Somalia(ATMIS) and winning key other areas including the debt relief, lifting arms embargo and joining the East African Community.
