Obock, Djibouti – Djibouti’s Prime Minister, Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, officially inaugurated the newly renovated 22-kilometer Orobor-Medeho road, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development. The road upgrade is expected to enhance mobility, lower transportation costs, and improve the overall quality of life for residents in the Obock region.

The project, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Djibouti Roads Agency (ADR), aligns with the government’s broader agenda to strengthen national infrastructure and promote regional integration. The inauguration ceremony, held yesterday, was attended by key government officials, including the Minister of Infrastructure and Equipment, the Minister of Transport, the Governor of Obock, the French Ambassador to Djibouti, and the Director-General of the Djibouti Roads Agency.

The Orobor-Medeho road is a critical component of the ADIL program, an EU-funded initiative aimed at fostering economic growth and enhancing public services in rural areas. In addition to road infrastructure, the ADIL program supports other development projects, such as the establishment of a boat engine repair center to boost the fishing industry and a modern marketplace to improve commerce and access to essential goods.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Mohamed expressed appreciation for the European Union’s continuous support in funding key infrastructure projects across Djibouti.

“The European Union has been an instrumental partner in our efforts to enhance economic and infrastructure development. Their support for this project underscores a significant stride towards better transportation networks and enhanced regional connectivity,” he stated.

Minister of Transport and Equipment Hassan Houmed emphasized the government’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth.

“Recognizing the crucial role of well-connected transport networks, the government is focused on developing road infrastructure to bridge urban and rural areas, thus fostering economic expansion and community integration. This newly renovated road is expected to improve transportation efficiency, stimulate trade activity, reduce vehicle operating costs, and attract investors looking to explore economic opportunities in the region,” Houmed remarked.

The renovation of the Orobor-Medeho road is anticipated to significantly boost trade, improve access to essential services, and encourage investment, ultimately contributing to the economic vibrancy of Djibouti’s Obock region. As part of the government’s long-term development strategy, the enhancement of road networks remains a priority to ensure sustainable growth and regional connectivity.
