Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-Djibouti’s electricity company (EDD) and the UAE owned power group, Amea Power on Sunday signed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to construct a 25 Mega Watts solar PV plant in Djibouti.

The Director of the Djibouti Electricity Company (EDD), Djama Ali Guelleh, said that this project is part of President Ismail Omar Guelleh’s development agendas particularly in the energy sector.

“We are very happy to sign this agreement with the Amea power group, which will fund this project. This project is part of the president’s agenda to promote infrastructural development, particularly in the energy sector,”

He then stated expressed appreciation to Djibouti’s minister of energy and the CEO of Amea Power, stating that the construction work will begin shortly and will last practically between 16 and 18 months.

“We thank the minister of energy and the CEO of the Amea power group who have always been supportive to us through this process until we signed the agreement today. The construction will start will start immediately and will take about 16 to 18 months,” he added.

He further indicated that the construction of this Grand Bara solar power plant will ultimately lead to a reduction in tariffs for the greater benefit of our fellow citizens.

“The construction of this plant will promote the production of clean, reliable and affordable energy considering our suitable weather like the winds, and the availability of the sun. This project will meet the electricity demands of our demands of our citizens, as well as reducing the tariffs,” he added.

The CEO of Amea Power Company, Mr. Hussain Al Nowais emphasized the strategic importance of such a solar project.

“This solar project will allow Djibouti to expand its potential in solar energy as well as use its suitable weather for the production of clean and renewable energy,” said Mr. Hussain Al Nowais, the CEO of Amea Power.

He mentioned that the group’s continuous large-scale solar projects in many countries, in Africa and around the world.

“We are engaged in several development energy projects in Africa, especially in East Africa which is an important target for our AMEA power because it has great potential for the development of clean, reliable and affordable energy,” he added.

Mr. Hussain expressed his gratitude to the Djibouti Minister for Energy HE Yonis Ali Guedi, well as the Director General of EDD, Mr. Djama Ali Guelleh for their strong involvement in the success of this project.

Djibouti’s Minister of Energy, HE Yonis Ali Guedi highlighted the importance of this agreement for Amea’s potential investments and constructions in the country.

“Indeed, this signature, a crucial step in the realization of the large-scale solar project in our country, thus opens the way for constructions and opportunities by the company AMEA POWER,” Minister Yonis said.n

In July 2022, a similar agreement was signed between the Amea Power and Djibouti’s minister of energy, Yonis Ali Guedi, to build a 30 MWp solar PV plant in Djibouti.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, and the director of the state-owned electricity company, Électricité de Djibouti (EDD), Mr. Djama Ali Guelleh.
