The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accompanied by a high-level delegation, arrived in London on Monday to participate in the Global Food Security Summit, addressing pressing global food insecurity.

President Mohamud will co-chair the summit alongside UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the United Arab Emirates, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Somalia will co-host the Summit with @RishiSunak in London. The UK and Somalia are working together to tackle food insecurity in Somalia,” UK embassy in Somalia said on X.

After the summit, the president will meet with UK government officials to discuss strengthening Somalia-UK partnerships in defence and security, particularly Somalia’s efforts in the fight against terrorism.

“During his visit, the president will meet with top UK government officials to discuss Somalia-UK partnerships in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab terrorists, which is a threat to regional and global peace,” said Abdikadir Ali Dige, Villa Somalia spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that the president will also discuss with the officials on the possible lifting of the arms embargo imposed on Somalia three decades ago.

According to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the continuous torrential rains, which began in October, have killed 50 people, affected 1.7 million others, with over 600,000 being displaced.

Somali people heavily rely on livestock, fisheries, and agriculture, all of which have recently been impacted by the ongoing floods. These floods have destroyed agricultural farms and swept away tens of thousands of animals, leading to food shortage in Somalia.
