The Executive Secretary stated that IGAD, along with President Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, reached an agreement to promote peace through a ceasefire and respond to the humanitarian situation in the country.

Earlier this month, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the African Union have convened a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, aimed at discussing the ongoing conflict and mediating between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Last week, the President of the Transitional Sovereignty of Sudan met with Kenya’s President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to discuss the situation in Sudan.

“Efforts to bring all the concerned parties in the Sudan conflict together to resolve the conflict are in top gear. It is important that all stakeholders in Sudan are involved in reaching a solution that will stop the loss of life, destruction of infrastructure and property and return the country to normalcy,” Ruto said.

Sudan has been gripped by violent conflicts that erupted on April 15, 2023, starting from a disagreement and armed clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the conflicts have affected 24.7 million people, including the killing of over 5,000 civilians, internal displacement of 5.1 million people, and 1.2 million cross-border displacements.
