Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-The 41st General Assembly of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) was held on Saturday in Djibouti, with the attendance of the Heads of States of member countries.

The assembly aimed to discuss the interests of the East African countries within IGAD, with a particular focus on the situation in Sudan and how to achieve a lasting solution to end the conflicts.

The Heads of States agreed to facilitate constructive dialogue between the Sudanese Transition Council and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to put an end to the conflict and the cessation of hostilities.

The Executive Secretary of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, reiterated IGAD’s commitment to leading peaceful dialogue between the two parties. He stated that the de-escalation of conflicts will address the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

“Pleased with the successful outcomes at the 41st Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly in Djibouti, graciously hosted by H.E. President Ismail Omar Guelleh. Appreciated the constructive discussions and guidance on addressing the conflict in the Republic of Sudan,” Dr. Gebeyehu said.

“The Assembly effectively secured a commitment from the Sudanese belligerents to promptly convene and agree upon a cessation of hostilities—a crucial step in addressing the aspirations of the Sudanese people,” he added.

The President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, who serves as the president of IGAD, called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, stating that the conflicts will affect regional peace and stability.

“I call for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan. The violence threatens the country’s existence and regional stability. Today’s summit is a beacon of hope, and Sudan needs peace,” President Guelleh said.

Last month, the president of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met with President Ismail Omar Guelleh to discuss working towards finding a solution to the war in Sudan, promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, and enhancing cooperation in international affairs.

President Al-Burhan praised the vital role played by IGAD, under the Chairmanship of President Guelleh, in calling for accelerated efforts to put an end to the conflict in Sudan.

Djibouti currently holds the position of the IGAD presidency, leading the 8 member states: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.
