Addis Ababa(Mogadishu24)-African Union Commission Chairperson, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, has called for an immediate international investigation following a devastating attack in Gaza, Palestine by Israeli forces.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, 29 February 2024, resulted in significant casualties, with more than 100 Palestinians either killed or wounded while seeking humanitarian aid in the occupied region.

“The loss of life and the scale of injuries among those simply seeking life-saving aid is unacceptable,” Mahamat stated, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for the victims. The Chairperson’s call for an investigation aims to identify and bring to account those responsible for the attack, highlighting a grave concern for the respect of international human rights laws.

In response to the ongoing conflict, Mahamat reiterated the African Union’s stance for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Palestine. “The continued assault by the State of Israel against the Palestinian people’s lives and livelihoods must end,” he urged, calling on both sides to halt hostilities and engage in peaceful resolution efforts.

The Chairperson appealed to the international community, especially major world powers, to play a more active role in imposing peace and ensuring the rights of the Palestinian people are upheld. “It is imperative that the global community steps up to prevent further loss of life and to secure a future where peace and justice prevail for all,” Mahamat concluded.
