Mao Ning Spokeerperson of Chinese Ministry of foreign Affairs of China

Beijing(Mogadishu24)-Chinese Ministry of foreign Affairs on Thursday clarified its position about worsening diplomatic relations between the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopian following MoU with Somaliland, leasing 20 km of sea access to Ethiopia on January 1st.

Mao Ning, Spokesperson of Chinese Ministry of foreign Affairs of China said that China stands for upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and supports countries in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Somaliland is part of Somalia. China supports the Federal Government of Somalia in safeguarding national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Meanwhile, we hope that regional countries will handle regional affairs well through diplomatic dialogue and achieve common development by having friendly cooperation”, Mao Ning, Spokesperson said while responding to a question asked by China Review News.

The Federal Government of Somalia received solidarity from its International Partners, Organizations and countries across the world following sensitive agreement between Ethiopia and breakaway republic of Somaliland, leasing 20 kilometers sea access and naval base to Ethiopia.

The African Union, United Nations, European Union, Arab league, OIC, Egypt and the United States of America responded to the Somali Government’s urgent request to the them, expressing full solidarity and respect with the sovereignty of Somalia.

The Somali Government firmly refuted the ‘so-called’ deal, terming it null and void and unacceptable after holding an extra-ordinary session a day after the news of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ethiopia and Somaliland. The tension worsened the diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries. Somalia recalled its Ambassador to Ethiopia while protests against Ethiopia’s actions are taking place in major cities in the country.
