Mogadishu, Somalia – The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) officially issued a certificate of registration to the Somali Union Party today, making it the first political association to be registered since the commencement of party registration.

The certification ceremony, held in Mogadishu, was attended by the Chairperson of the Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, Deputy Chairperson Saadiq Abshir Garaad, and other members of the NIEBC.

“Today, we are officially issuing certification to all associations that have met the necessary legal requirements for recognition. The Somali Union Party is now officially registered,” stated Chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan during the event.

He further emphasized that a competitive political environment is emerging, with six to seven political groups already having submitted their applications. The Chairperson expressed optimism that Somalia is moving toward universal suffrage elections.

“Today marks the opening of a new chapter in Somalia’s democratization process. The country is now on the path to free and fair elections, where Somali citizens everywhere will have the right to vote,” he added.

The National Electoral Commission had announced the opening of political association registration on January 20, 2025, with March 31, 2025, set as the deadline for applications. The Somali Union Party, founded in 2023, is the first political association to officially register after meeting all legal requirements. Mohamed Deeq Sheikh Mohamed received the certification on behalf of the party.

However, the commission’s efforts have faced criticism, particularly from Puntland, Jubaland, and various opposition groups. These critics argue that the commission’s approach could escalate political tensions and deepen existing disputes.
