Addis Ababa(Mogadishu24)-In a notable government reshuffle, Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives has ratified a series of appointments made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, introducing fresh faces into key positions. Among the most significant changes, Temesgen Tiruneh, the former head of Ethiopia’s intelligence services, has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister. This move is seen as a strategic enhancement of the country’s leadership, aligning with Ethiopia’s broader objectives of stability and progress.

Temesgen Tiruneh is a figure well-versed in the intricacies of Ethiopia’s security and intelligence framework. Having previously served as the President of the Amhara region, his leadership was pivotal during critical periods of unrest. His appointment in July 2019 followed the tragic assassination of the former President of the Amhara region, Ambachew Mekonnen, along with two of his administration members. Additionally, the reshuffle sees Taye Atskesellasie, formerly Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stepping into the role of Foreign Minister. Atskesellasie brings a wealth of experience in international relations, having been a key figure in Ethiopia’s diplomatic corps.

Temesgen’s ascendancy to the role of Deputy Prime Minister follows his recent appointment as the head of Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service in November 2020. His leadership has been instrumental in navigating the country through periods of emergency, especially in the Amhara region, showcasing his ability to manage complex security situations.

Before his ascent into the higher echelons of Ethiopia’s political and security apparatus, Temesgen had a longstanding collaboration with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, dating back over a decade. Their partnership was particularly notable during their tenure at the Information Network Security Agency (INSA), where they jointly worked on national security initiatives.
