The Federal Members of Parliament representing Puntland State have issued a stern warning to the Puntland State Parliament in regards to a proposed constitutional amendment that has triggered a political stalemate and sparked conflicts in Garowe.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Members of Parliament expressed their concerns about the potential consequences of the proposed amendment.

“Throughout the series of meetings, our leaders engaged in extensive discussions aimed at finding a resolution to the political stalemate in Puntland, which has unfortunately led to conflicts. The primary focus of these discussions was to enhance the security of the Puntland region and seek a peaceful resolution through negotiations and reconciliations. Our leaders spared no effort to prevent any adverse consequences of the political stalemate, including the tragic loss of lives,” reads the statement.

The primary focus of these discussions was to enhance the security of the Puntland region and seek a peaceful resolution through negotiations and reconciliations. The statement emphasized the leaders’ unwavering efforts to prevent any tragic loss of lives resulting from the political stalemate.

Following the comprehensive deliberations involving various stakeholders, including the President, Vice President, Parliamentary Committee, PUNSA’s civil society, political organizations, and representatives from different societal sectors, several key resolutions were reached.

Among the key resolutions emphasized the reinforcement of defense in the Sool region while maintaining community unity. The significance of prioritizing Puntland’s security, with a specific focus on the capital city, was also underscored. Additionally, the statement stressed the importance of putting any amendments to the Puntland Constitution, which could potentially escalate tensions, on hold.

Regarding the upcoming elections, it was decided that due to the approaching end of the current Puntland government’s term and the impracticality of conducting timely one-person-one-vote elections, the election will be held on January 8, 2024, through the traditional selection process. This decision aims to ensure a smooth transition of power and uphold democratic principles.

Furthermore, the Members of Parliament emphasized the significance of conducting elections for local councils in the remaining districts of the Nugal region. This commitment to inclusive and democratic processes will contribute to effective governance at the local level.

The statements released by the Federal Members of Parliament demonstrate a collaborative effort to address the challenges facing Puntland and promote stability in Garowe.
