Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, sacked Dr. Hassan Omar Mahad-Allah from his position as the President of Somali National University on Sunday.

In Presidential Decree LR 144, Dr. Hassan Omar Mahada’Allah was removed from his role and will be replaced by Dr. Hassan Osman in an acting capacity.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Education, Heritage, and Higher Education issued a statement regarding the appointment of Dr. Hassan Osman.

“On October 15, 2023, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud removed Dr. Hassan Omar Mahada’Allah from his position as the President of Somali National University. As per Presidential Decree LR 144, the Minister of Education, Heritage, and Higher Education appoints Dr. Hassan Osman Elmi in an acting capacity,” the statement reads.

Last month, Dr. Hassan Omar Mahada’Allah had criticized the higher education system in the country after participating in a conference organized by the Heritage Institute to discuss education system in Somalia.

In April 2021, Dr. Hassan Omar Mahada’Allah was appointed as the president of the Somali National University.

There have been reports in the last few days that Nageye Ali Khalif, a lecturer at the Somali National University, has defected to Al-Shabaab militants amid the government’s intensified efforts against Al-Shabaab sympathizers.

Following these reports, the Somali Ministry of Education launched a Higher Education Management Information System to strengthen the storage and monitoring of students’ and teachers’ information, as well as maintain an educational database.
