Banjul, Gambia(Mogadishu24)-Somalia’s candidacy for the African Union (AU) leadership,Fawzia Yusuf Haji Ada received strong support from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ministerial meeting held in Banjul, Gambia Thursday.The conference, which brought together foreign ministers from Islamic countries, endorsed Fawzia Yusuf for the position of AU chairperson.The OIC ministers collectively expressed their backing for Somalia’s peace, stability, independence, and territorial integrity, reaffirming their support against any violations of the country’s sovereignty according to Somali diplomats attending the Conference.“The unity and stability of Somalia are paramount, and we stand firmly against any threats to its territorial integrity,” the ministers noted in their official statement.Foreign Minister Ahmed Macallin Fiqi held several bilateral discussions that concluded with a mutual understanding and support for Somalia’s ambitions within the AU. The Somali delegation, comprising influential Somali diplomats including two former foreign ministers and the Somali ambassador to the AU, played a crucial role in garnering support for Adan’s candidacy.The endorsement of Adan by the OIC is expected to significantly boost her profile in the upcoming AU chairmanship elections. The leaders of the Islamic countries are set to meet again in Banjul to further discuss and solidify their support for Somalia’s candidate.This move marks a vital step in strengthening Somalia’s international relationships and highlights its active participation in major regional and global organizations.
