Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia on Thursday banned the usage of light, plastic bags in the country to preserve the environment from waste and pollution.Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi said in a statement that the decision of the banning will be affective from June 30, 2024 and warned traders against importing such products after that date.The Statement said that the Ministry encouraged the traders to think of other alternative products for carrying things.The Ministry’s message regarding the ban of plastic bags comes at a very critical time because the country was impacted by the climate changes mainly floods, droughts and extreme weather and wastes.Social activists and health practitioners outspoken the negative impacts of plastics earlier, but this message will strengthen that efforts, in order, to mange problems related to the environment and waste management.
