Hargeisa(Mogadishu24)-The Breakaway Republic of Somaliland has on Saturday marked May 18th as a ‘National Day’ in which it separated from the rest of the Republic of Somalia in 1991 and restored peace and order in areas under its control in the northwest Somalia.

The region tried to gain independence from the world during those years, but failed to be recognized as an independent country from the rest of the country, Somalia.

Somaliland President, Muse Bihi Abdi signed sensitive deal with Ethiopian Government, leasing 20 kilometers of sea access to Ethiopia in exchange for recognition on January 1st, this year, but the Memorandum of Understanding between these two sides created regional instability and worsened the relations between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Speaking at the celebration of May 18, Muse Bihi said that the deal with Ethiopia will take soon take effect, and congratulated the people on 33rd anniversary of their one struggle.

Minister of Foreign Affairs for Somaliland, Dr Essa Kayd congratulated all Somalilanders for their patriotism, and resilience, saying his administration was working on the restoration of our sovereignty.

“I am proud of our people and our country. It took us 33 years to restore what we lost, we are still progressing and we will continue to fight for our sovereignty. No other nation has done what Somaliland has done and it’s truly something to be proud of”, Kayd said on X.

But the future an independent country for Somaliland depends on how the Federal Government of Somalia accept to that decision which divides the country, as it lobs for unity and co-existance and satisfy Somaliland to Federal Member State, instead of breaking away from the rest of country.

This commemoration comes five months before the region is prepared hold joint parts and presidential elections on November 13, 2024
