Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government, Salah Ahmed Jama on Sunday declared ‘National Emergency Situation’ in the country after heavy rains and floods by the revivers related to Elnino caused human casualties, displacement throughout the country.

Salah said that about 10 people were killed in the latest areas affected by the on-going Dayre rains in south-central Somalia, saying the Government will mobilize efforts to extend support to those impacted by the current floods in districts in Gedo region.

“Since the start of the 2023 deyr (October to December) rains, floods due to heavy rains have affected at least 405,652 people, with 14 deaths, mostly in South West, Hirshabelle, Jubaland and Galmudug states”, United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a Statement yesterday.  

Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Khadijo Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi expressed concern over the latest humanitarian situations, calling for united action to support to the victims and raise awareness of the communities to reduce the risk.

“Our hearts are with our fellow citizens facing dire challenges amid unprecedented floods, which have forced over 400K+ people to flee their homes. Let’s come together to support relief efforts, spread awareness, and champion climate action to safeguard our communities”, Khadijah said.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s call comes as heavy rains and river floods with casualties and displacement reported in the past 24 hours.
