Addis-Ababa(Mogadishu24)-The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, has expressed deep concern over the rising tensions in northern Ethiopia, particularly in the contested areas of Raya Alamata, Zata, and Ofla.

In light of the escalating conflicts, the Chairperson has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and emphasized the importance of ensuring civilian safety to prevent further displacement.

He urged both parties to adhere to and fully implement the Agreement for Lasting Peace Through a Permanent Cessation of Hostilities (COHA), which was signed by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on November 2, 2022, in Pretoria, South Africa. The Chairperson also advocated for the initiation of political dialogues as the most effective solution to the ongoing disputes in the contested areas, as outlined in the COHA.

Reaffirming the African Union’s dedication to supporting the Ethiopian government and its people, the Chairperson has directed the relevant department of the Commission to take all necessary measures to assist in resolving the situation.
