Djiboutis Golden Triumph An Athletic Showcase

Djibouti has shown exceptional performance in the Francophone Countries Athletics Championships held in Congo, winning a total of 9 medals; 4 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

Mumin Buh Gelle has been an impressive athlete, securing 2 gold medals in the half marathon and 10000M events. Mohamed Ismail Ibrahim Fatah also seized two Gold medals in the 5000M and 3000M categories. Jamal Abdi Diriye has earned silver medal in the 10000M race and a bronze in the half marathon, while Abdirizack Hassan Gire clinched the bronze medal in the 5000M race.

In the Judo games, Sassu’s has shown great skills winning him a silver medal, further adding to Djibouti’s milestone achievements in the competition. These achievements have been extended to the women’s division as well, with Samia Hassan Noor securing a bronze medal in the 10000M race.

Hassana Kamil Mohamed, Djibouti’s Sports Secretary, stated that this is a milestone for the people of Djibouti. He also expressed gratitude to the government for its unwavering commitment to revitalizing the Sports department.

“I congratulate the winners for their achievements, bringing pride to both themselves and Djibouti as a whole. This win shows President Guelleh’s dedication to revitalizing and investing in sports, enabling Djibouti to compete on the international stage,” stated Hassan Kamil, Djibouti’s Sports Secretary.

Gold medalist Mumin Gele acknowledged the government’s support throughout their journey, from training and preparations for the competition.

“The government of Djibouti has been providing us with the necessary support and invested in us throughout the preparation period for this event,” said Gele.

Djibouti’s achievements in the Francophone competition have been lauded by its citizens, who appreciated the government’s efforts to rejuvenate the sports sector and show the country’s ability to excel in international events.

“I am excited today because of our athletes who have contributed to this remarkable victory in the Francophone competition. I congratulate them for their accomplishments and for showcasing Djibouti’s prowess on the global stage. I also extend my congratulations and gratitude to the government of Djibouti, led by President Ismail Omar Guelleh, for revitalizing the sports sector and making substantial investments in our athletes, who have brought us immense pride,” said Ali Omar Osobe, a representative of the youth in Dikhil.

Djibouti’s presence in global athletics championships has been progressively transforming. Djibouti last participated in the 2019 championships hosted in Doha, Qatar, represented by four athletes.

Djibouti’s most recent medal award prior to this accomplishment dates back to 1991, when former long-distance runner Hassan Ahmed Salah won the silver medal in the World Championships held in Tokyo, Japan. Hassan Ahmed Salah also secured the gold medal twice in 1985 by winning at the African Championships in Cairo, Egypt, and the World Cup held in Hiroshima, Japan.
