Brussels(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met with top officials of the European Union during his work visit in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss security developments in Somalia and EU’s support in the fight against terrorism.

The President met with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell Fontelles, to discuss the EU’s ongoing support for Somalia in its fight against Al-Shabaab and post-ATMIS security support.

“H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Josep Borrell Fontelles, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in Brussels. They discussed the latest security developments, including the ongoing fight against the terrorists and the EU’s post-ATMIS security support to Somalia,” a statement from Villa Somalia read.

President Hassan also had a meeting with the President of the European Council to discuss the Somali government’s efforts to combat terrorism and the EU’s continued support in Somalia’s pursuit for peace and stability.

“I had a fruitful meeting with EU Council President Charles Michel. Our government is steadfast in its commitment to eradicating the threat of terrorism, advancing democratization & state-building, & propelling growth. We are pleased with our cooperation with the EU at all levels,” President Hassan Sheikh shared on his official X account, formerly Twitter.

The federal government of Somalia has intensified its fight against Al-Shabaab, strengthening its efforts at the regional level by seeking security cooperation with neighbouring countries and the global community.

Earlier this month, President Hassan met with his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afwerki, to discuss ways of strengthening security and defense cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared a total war against the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization after his re-election in May 2022. He stated that Al-Shabaab has destabilized regional security and stability, posing threats not only to Somalia but also to the entire world.
