Nairobi(Mogadishu24)-Iranian Ambassador to Kenya, Ali Gholampour on Sunday confirmed the release of 33 Iranian fishermen from prison, these were among 36 foreign nationals who were found guilty of illegally fishing in the Somali waters and sentenced by the Benadir Regional Court in June, 2023

Ali Mohamed Omar Balcad, the sponsor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, has informed him that 33 Iranian fishermen and sailors who were imprisoned in Somalia have been released and are returning to our country by air, Iran’s Ambassador to Kenya Ali Gholampour announced.

According to Iranian News Agency, IRNA quoting Ambassador Ali Gholampour said that the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Somalia’s government have announced their readiness to move towards the process of reviving bilateral relations that were interrupted a few years ago.

Somali Government cut diplomatic relations with Iran and ordered all diplomats and embassy staff in the country to leave within 72 hours early on January 2016. But now Iranian diplomat’s remarks seem that they two nations are willing to restore the old fractured relations back.
