Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somali Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre on Sunday appointed Ahmed Moalim Fiqi as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, leaving another key Ministerial Post of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation in which he was holding since August,2022

He was born in Galkayo town in Mudug region in 1971, raised and took his education in Mogadishu, Fiqi was studying at Somali National University when the central Government of Somalia collapsed in 1991 and then he pursued his education in Sudan until 1998 and then Malaysia for study.

Ahmed Moalim Fiqi became the first Ambassador to Somalia to Sudan from 2010 to 2011 becoming Director of the Country’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) from 2011 to 2013, it was when the Somali Government backed by the African Union Peacekeeping Troops gathered their muscle to push Al-Shabaab out the capital Mogadishu and it’s suburbs.

He ran for the Presidency of Galmudug State in Somalia in 2016, but he was narrowly defeated, but later he was satisfied to hold regional Ministerial position in 2020 becoming the Minister of Galmudug State for Security until he resigned in October 2021.

Ahmed Moalim Fiqi became a member of the Federal Parliament in 2022, he is considered to be close ally of the President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. He became a Minister for the country’s Ministry of foreign affairs, lacking Minister since former Minster resigned in December last year because of his intention to vie for the Puntland State leadership.

The country is currently facing security and diplomatic challenges, both need international engagements and influences, in particular the war on terror and current diplomatic row between the Ethiopian Government and Somalia after Ethiopia signed an MoU with Somaliland, leasing 20 km of sea access to Ethiopia. It is not yet known about his capacity regarding to the diplomatic games and solutions to this crisis particularly.
