Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Hussein Sheikh Mohamud has resigned from his position as the Chief of Staff of the Federal Government of Somalia, a role he held since May 23rd, 2023.

The Chief of Staff officially submitted his resignation letter to the President of the Federal Government, as confirmed by sources within Villa Somalia.

According to these sources, he stepped down due to issues related to his political aspirations for the presidency of the Southwest State in the upcoming elections. However, the timing of the elections remains unknown.

Hussein Sheikh previously served as a senator, although he lost his seat before his appointment to the Chief of Staff position by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

He is also a member of the President’s UPD party and a close ally of the President. He campaigned tirelessly for President Hassan’s re-election on May 15th, 2022.

During his time in office, he actively participated in various government decision-making processes and important political activities that were crucial for the government, particularly during the National Consultative Council’s conference, where several agreements were reached.

The previous Federal Government has been playing an essential role in the regional Presidential elections, where candidates seek political support from the government based in Mogadishu. With heightened political tensions, regional elections have faced prolonged delays, leading to conflicts.
